You Can’t Hold Back the Tide

King Canute had his throne brought to the beach. There he commanded the rising tide to hold back. It did not.

Canute knew the limits of his power; he was humble and wise. Indeed, he never wore his crown again.

He knew his limits.

As a futurist, I have written about the demographic trends in the U.S.

Whites will be a minority by 2040, with Hispanics, a very diverse group, being 18% of our population. Few whites, especially men, understand this intellectually, but most sense it in their souls. Populist extremists declare that whites will be “replaced,” and fear arises.

The recent special immigration of Dutch South Africans illustrates this, as does the rejection of DEI policies, the push-back of women in the military and the “take-over” of the Kennedy Center.

Whites see it; they feel it. They know it is coming.

Trump understands and manipulates this. The left does not.

It is a strong force, a creation of real fear.

The fear of the future.

It is the fear, as well, where women are taking leadership roles, and minorities are moving up.

Forget the fact that women now outnumber male college grads or that they are dominate in engineering and science.

This is similar to the fears of blacks playing baseball or getting voting rights; the fear of interracial dating and marriage. (There was a time when a mixed marriage was between a Catholic and a Lutheran!)

As Bob Dylan sings:

Come mothers and fathers

Throughout the land

And don’t criticize

What you don’t understand

Your sons and your daughters

Are beyond your command

Your old road is rapidly agin’

Please get out of the new one

If you can’t lend your hand

For the times they are a-changin’

This is an old story in our country. The Irish and Jews were believed to threaten society, and in a sense, they have for the better.

We excluded the Japanese and Chinese and denied them citizenship when we could. Yet they have greatly benefited our culture and economic well -being.

The times are changing and King Canute was right- you can’t command the tide to stop rising.
